JANUARY 2024 NOTICE:
WE ARE HAVING TROUBLE RECEIVING EMAILS AT THE tim@timothymahr.com EMAIL ADDRESS PREVIOUSLY CITED WEBSITE.
PLEASE SEND ALL COMMUNICATIONS TO mahr@stolaf.edu.
Our apologies for this disruption in communication, which has been going on for sometime, but of which we’ve only recently become aware. It’s frustrating and a very common problem we’ve found with Squarespace-designed websites communicating with a GoDaddy site host. VERY FRUSTRATING!
PLEASE KNOW THAT ALL SALES TRANSACTIONS THROUGH THIS SITE REMAIN SECURE AND ARE RUNNING CLEARLY.
Thank you for your understanding. Again, please now use mahr@stolaf.edu.
Thank you for visiting Mahr Music Press LLC!
Well, here we go! I’ve been contemplating entering the self-publishing world for a number of years now, and it just seemed to be the right time this past summer to dive in. Mahr Music Press LLC. Whew. It’s been exciting and a lot more work than I anticipated! I certainly appreciate having had the expert advice of a number of people in the process of building www.timothymahr.com.
I’m grateful beyond measure for the many opportunities I’ve had to create music, and at this point in my career I’m interested in allowing these pieces to breathe with the fresh vitality that comes with increased rehearsals and performances.
As many of you know, my position at St. Olaf College as a professor of music and the conductor of the St. Olaf Band is my full-time job. I’m also the Conductor and Music Director of the Minnesota Symphonic Winds, and I maintain an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician, and commissioned composer [see NEWS and CALENDAR].
I view my ability to compose as being a God-given talent and I can’t imagine being able to conceive and create my music without His guiding hand. This humbles me. I’m fortunate to have had many people and institutions believe in my art, often supporting it with commissions, and I am very grateful for this trust and opportunity. Again, this humbles me. I’ve had the chance to learn from some of the greats and I feel so privileged and humbled by this. The simple fact that you’re reading this right now humbles me. I’ve got a gratifyingly amazing position, and, most importantly, I have a healthy, loving family that is truly at the center of who and what I am.
I guess I just wish it were all a little easier. Composing is exhilarating and frustrating at the same time. Writing music is stressful, but it all becomes worth it when a piece finally comes together. Mahler said that his symphonies were worlds unto themselves – now that’s rather daunting. A composition begins within a void of nothingness and when completed it has taken on a structural and spiritual life that holds the potential to expressively connect with a listener in a visceral and meaningful way. To me this all seems somewhat magical and it’s certainly touched by the divine at times. We should indeed by listening with our hearts.
Thank your for your interest in my musical efforts! I’m honored to have you stop by Mahr Music Press LLC at www.timothymahr.com, explore and listen for a while, and to consider programming my music.
